Inspectors find signs of progress at 'inadequate' council

A council rated as 'inadequate' by Ofsted and subsequently criticised for its slow pace of progress is beginning to show signs of improvement, inspectors have said.

Sandwell Council was subject to three highly critical Ofsted reports in the space of two years, with inadequate ratings for its children's services in June 2015, children in care services in August 2013 and child protection work in April 2013.

Four monitoring visits over the last two years highlighted concerns about the slow pace of improvement efforts, but following a fifth visit, earlier this month, the inspectorate said two additional heads of service had been appointed as a result of senior leaders recognising the scale of improvement needed.

It also found that efforts to bolster the permanent social care workforce and reduce caseloads are beginning to have an impact.
