Ujima Housing Association has contacted the Housing Corporation after receiving independent financial and legal advice.
The association is not currently willing to offer any further details of the nature of its difficulties. But its group chief executive, Keith Kerr, and chief financial officer, George Avwunu, were suspended earlier this month.
Ujima works across London, Reading and Slough, and manages around 5,000 properties.
The Housing Corporation placed the organisation under supervision earlier this year, indicating that it had concerns about how the business was being run.
It also appointed three members to Ujima’s board, and the reconstituted board then sought legal advice on its position.
