Healthy living campaign delivered by bus

2 mins read Public Health Youth Work
A converted bus is helping to promote healthy lifestyles to young people in Darwen, Lancashire.
The bus was unveiled in Darwen's Market Square in Darwen 18 January

Blackburn & Darwen Youth Zone, which runs a youth hub in the town, says the mobile service will help to eliminate "barriers to engagement".

The bus purchase and refit has been funded by a Darwen family legacy through the WM & BM Lloyd Charity Trust and healthy living campaign Together an Active Future (TaAF), supported by Sports England via Blackburn with Darwen Council.

The move is part of the Youth Zone's £3.3 million expansion programme and aims to double its membership to 2,000.

Jamie Swales, grants and trusts lead at Darwen Youth Zone, said: “We’ll be driving the bus, six days a week, into different communities around Darwen providing enriching programmes focused on leading the young people of Darwen to live healthier lifestyles through sport and physical activity.

“We will provide a diverse activity schedule focused on meeting young people where they are, providing a hot meal free of charge for Youth Zone members, eliminating all barriers to engagement.”

The wider redevelopment will boast a new wellbeing area, creative workshop space, recording and DJ studio, gaming zone and multi-use spaces, as well as an upgrade to its outdoor sports facilities.
