1 min read
The rights of young people to be protected and listened to as adults are have been woven into core registration and training for UK doctors for the first time.

The development coincides with the expected launch of the firstdedicated draft guidance by the General Medical Council (GMC) onchildren and young people, due today (15 November).

And the medical regulator has simultaneously revised core guidance thatspells out what doctors need to do to stay on the medical register.

The register now includes duties that tie doctors into child protectionand safeguarding children's health needs, being aware of their needswhen seeing parents or carers, and says they should "respect and listento their views". The move to revise the register follows concerns thatdoctors often lack the skills to communicate with children and, particularly, adolescents.

Michael Keegan, policy adviser in the GMC's standards and ethics team'said the proposals released today flesh out in more detail how doctorsshould meet children's needs, particularly those who rarely see or treatchildren.
