Harrow toolkit to identify trafficked children

1 min read Social Care
Harrow Council has launched a toolkit aimed at helping children's professionals identify victims of child traffickers.

According to the council many of the victims are forced to work in street crime, where they can make up to £100,000 a year for traffickers.

Latest figures show that the council has investigated 41 suspected cases of child trafficking in the borough.

The toolkit features sections on what child trafficking is, how to help and support victims and the importance of data sharing between councils, health services and police on the issue.

Christine Bednell, Harrow Council portfolio holder for children services, said: "Safeguarding children in our borough is a key priority for us. We developed this toolkit because we know that raising awareness for frontline workers and identifying victims at the earliest opportunity is paramount."

The toolkit builds on guidance released earlier this year on child trafficking by the London Safeguarding Children Board that is being piloted in 11 London councils.
