Government will not change youth policy in wake of the riots, says the DfE

The government has no plans to radically alter its forthcoming youth policy in response to last month's riots, the Department for Education has said.

A cross-government policy statement on services for young people is being developed and is expected to be published later this autumn.

In part, it will be shaped by comments received on a series of discussion papers, which outline areas including what role youth services can play in ensuring young people can fulfil their potential.

The papers were published in May following a Positive for Youth Summit in March and the deadline for comments is in less than two weeks (15 September).

A DfE spokeswoman told CYP Now that there are no plans to extend the consultation as a result of August’s riots or alter the scope. However, relevant views expressed on the riots would be taken into account along with all other responses, she added.
