Loughton denies youth cuts link to riots

Children's minister Tim Loughton has dismissed any suggestion that riots in London and other cities in England were the result of cuts to youth services.

Loughton said current reports estimate three-quarters of those charged in relation to the riots are over-18 and it would be wrong to condemn a whole generation of young people.

"There is no evidence that the current riots are linked to cuts in youth services," he said in a statement issued to CYP Now.

"The vast majority of young people are law abiding, well behaved and make a positive contribution to society.

"Leading organisations representing the voluntary and youth sector, such as the British Youth Council, National Youth Agency and the National Council for Voluntary Youth Services have joined us in condemning the violence that has taken place."
