Government to examine SEN service failures

The Government is to investigate a "lack of transparency" in the provision of services for children with special educational needs (SEN).

The investigation will also look at some local authorities' failure to comply with their duties to children with special needs and ways of tackling poor information given to parents.

It follows interim findings from SEN expert Brian Lamb's review of parental confidence in special education, which raised concerns that parents feel they have to "battle" the system to meet their children's needs.

Lamb, who is chair of the Special Educational Consortium, said: "Schools aren't passing on information to parents, and we need to find out why.

"Many of the parents we spoke to weren't clear about School Action Plus [when schools seek outside expertise] and hadn't seen the SEN Code of Practice. This is basic information schools are supposed to provide."
