Government pushes back decision on reporting of family courts

The decision on whether media restrictions on family court hearings should be relaxed has been put on hold until after the final report of the family justice review next year, the government has confirmed.

Last month the Ministry of Justice announced that it was to scrutinise legislation passed in Labour’s Children, Schools and Families Act that would extend the media’s right to report on family court cases.

Djanogly said: "The privacy of vulnerable children and families, and the media's freedom to scrutinise, are sensitive issues, on which a broad range of views have been strongly expressed, and we need to be clear on the family justice system's future direction before settling that debate."
