The Youth Social Action Journey Fund, launched by civil society minister Nick Hurd today, will support charities, social enterprises and businesses that help 10- to 20-year-olds take part in social action projects over the next two years.
It will support existing youth groups to increase the number of places, including national organisations such as the Scouts as well as local organisations.
Hurd explained: “We want to create a social action journey that every young person can easily get involved with and feel valued, hone their skills, make new friends and ultimately benefit their community.
“I created this £6m fund to support organisations to offer more young people places on their fantastic programmes benefiting the community as well as the young person themselves and make it easier for young people to progress onto the next challenging experience.”
A Cabinet Office spokesman said the fund was inspired by a review by Dame Julia Cleverdon, who wants the UK, where just 29 per cent of 16- to 24-year-olds volunteer, to rival other countries such as Canada, where youth participation is much higher.
