Government could save more by reinstating Playbuilder funding, claims Play England

Play England is calling for the government to reinstate funding for the Playbuilder programme after a report revealed that stopping investment in play will produce long-term financial costs to society.

The report conducted by Matrix Evidence and commissioned by Play England, examines the economic benefits of adventure playgrounds and other staffed play provision.

It concluded that from two outcomes of play provision – better academic performance and improved health – for every £1 invested in adventure playgrounds, society gets £1.32 back in social benefits. The overall estimated value of the benefits derived from just one adventure playground is £2.8m.

There are currently 180 adventure playgrounds in the UK but many are at risk from spending cuts, including 30 built over the past two years under the Labour government’s Play Strategy.

Adrian Voce, Play England director, said: "Today’s sedentary lifestyles are seriously damaging the long-term health and wellbeing of many children, as well as compromising their academic progress. Political parties from across the spectrum have recognised the need for action: to make public space safer and play areas more adventurous, so as to allow children the healthy, outdoor play experiences they need.
