Gove gives green light for school building projects as two councils threaten to sue

1 min read Education
Education Secretary Michael Gove has given the green light for building projects on 33 "sample schools" to go ahead, along with 44 new academies.

But projects on another 75 academies will remain under discussion until after the autumn spending review. Earlier this year, Gove controversially axed about 700 Building Schools for the Future projects in a bid to cut costs. Another 151 projects remained under discussion, including the 33 sample schools and 118 academies.

Projects on the sample schools, so named because they were the schools chosen by local authorities as the first to undergo building work, will now all go ahead.

"I know how hard councils and schools have worked on these projects and I have been anxious to ensure we can do everything we can, in difficult economic times, to support the crucial work of raising educational standards," said Gove, as he made the announcement today (6 August).
