Gove appoints Sidwell as schools commissioner

2 mins read Education
The head of a top-performing federation of south London schools has been appointed as the government's new schools commissioner.

Dr Elizabeth Sidwell, chief executive of the Haberdashers’ Federation, has 20 years' experience of running schools and was recently involved in turning an underperforming school into a rapidly improving academy.

Education Secretary Michael Gove has now charged her with championing his academies and free schools programme across the country.

Her role will involve encouraging and recruiting more potential academy sponsors, convincing leaders of good schools to go for academy status and raising the profile of free schools.

She will also work with local authorities to broker academy arrangements between underperforming schools and academy sponsors – the first of which are likely to be drawn from the 216 secondary and 962 primary schools deemed to be below the government’s new minimum standards.
