Frontline workers to join agony aunt on taskforce

The Social Work Taskforce is to expand its membership to include frontline practitioners but will keep tabloid agony aunt Deidre Sanders on board, despite criticism from some social workers.

Andrew Webb, vice chair of the Social Work Taskforce, defended Sanders to delegates at a British Association of Social Workers conference on protecting children from harm.

He said: "Deidre has not been removed. She makes an extremely valuable contribution. Following the trial of those found guilty of causing the death of Baby P one million Sun readers signed a petition calling for the removal of the director of children's services at Haringey. That is a big chunk of public opinion that we have to listen to."

The 16-strong taskforce will announce further details of how it intends to expand its membership in the next few days.

The Social Work Taskforce was set up to carry out a review of frontline social work practice at the beginning of this year.
