A newspaper agony aunt, directors of children services and a senior trade union officer are among the members of the 16-strong social work taskforce announced today.

Children's secretary Ed Balls and health secretary Alan Johnson today revealed the full membership of the new taskforce, a joint unit across the Department for Health and the Department for Children, Schools and Families.

Deidre Sanders of The Sun newspaper and Celia Atherton, founder and chief executive of Research in Practice, are among the group, which have been assigned the task of carrying out a review of frontline social work practice.

Announcing the members Balls said: "The role of the taskforce will be to support and develop their work, training, recruitment and day-to-day practice so that social work is, and is seen to be, a high quality and self confident profession with the confidence and esteem of the public."

The taskforce will be chaired by Moira Gibb, chief executive of Camden Borough Council with deputy chairs Andrew Webb, corporate director of children and young people at Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council and Bob Reitemeier, chief executive of the Children's Society.
