Teather gained 1,345 more votes than Butler in a contest that saw a 11 per cent vote swing in favour of the Liberal Democrats.
Butler had previously been an MP for Brent South before boundary changes forced her to contest the Brent Central seat. She was the third black woman to become a British MP and was also minister for youth citizens and youth engagement.
Kate Green and Lisa Nandy proved to be two of the more successful Labour candidates representing the children and young people's sector.
Nandy, policy adviser for The Children's Society, romped home in Labour safe-seat Wigan with a landslide win. Green, former chief executive of the Child Poverty Action Group, also defended Labour seat Stretford and Urmston, beating Conservative candidate Alex Williams by almost 9,000 votes.
