Education services in Reading lose funding worth 1.5m

1 min read Education
Funding for education services in Reading is being cut by 1.5m this year following a reduction in previously agreed government funding.

The borough council’s cabinet agreed the cuts on Monday (27 September), which include taking £280,000 from the schools improvement service, £429,000 from the youth service for projects for young people, and £350,000 from children's centres.

An extra £345,000 will also be cut from the Give it a Go fund, which was earmarked to pay for outings for children whose families can’t afford school trips, and one manager post, which is vacant, will be deleted from children-in-need services following a restructure, to save £75,000 a year. The local Connexions service will also lose £75,000.

The council’s opposition Labour leader criticised the Conservative/Lib Dem coalition for concentrating all of the cuts in education services, but Councillor Andrew Cumpsty, leader of the council, said they were because of the "failure of the previous government".
