Education: Conservatives back setting in primary schools

Setting of classes by ability should take place in primary as well as secondary schools, says a Conservative Party policy document issued last week.

The party's The state of state schools report also called for less inspections of early years settings to be eased and for a more liberal regime for nursery grants.

Meanwhile, schoolchildren throughout England are set to learn more about food and farming under plans announced by environment secretary David Miliband.

Under the plans aim to involve every school in the country and include educational events to help children learn more about the food they eat and where it comes from. The plans are part of the Year of Food and Farming and will start in September 2007.
