Education and Inspections Bill: Amendment to force schools to promote children's wellbeing

The children's sector has welcomed a surprise amendment to the Education and Inspections Bill that will require schools to promote the "wellbeing" of pupils, as well as their academic achievement.

Junior schools minister Lord Adonis tabled the amendment in the House ofLords last week after sustained pressure from the sector. It states:"The governing body of a maintained school shall, in discharging theirfunctions relating to the conduct of the school, promote the wellbeingof pupils at the school."

The Children's Services Network said the amendment was a significantbreakthrough for the children's agenda.

Director Martin Rogers said: "This is a welcome development. It isobvious that children's educational achievement is inextricablyconnected to the other Every Child Matters outcomes. They cannot learnadequately unless they are safe and healthy, and their contribution tosociety and economic wellbeing will be dependent on their educationalachievements.
