East London council praised over ‘inclusive education work’

Barking and Dagenham Council’s work to help schools promote inclusivity is being used as an example of good practice in a toolkit on preventing exclusions.

Its work with the borough to reduce the number of formal and informal exclusions is included in free guidance to help schools and academies to be “inclusive and nurturing”.

The toolkit has been created by the Royal Society for Arts, Manufacturers and Commerce (RSA) and the Mayor of London and follows an 11-month project to tackle exclusions.

The borough’s multi-agency Step Up Stay Safe initiative, involving mental health, social care, youth offending services and schools, to support young people at risk of exclusion is among strategies in Barking and Dagenham to be praised. This features weekly “vulnerable pupil hot clinics” to highlight and plan support for children who are not attending or engaging in school.
