Education services in Hackney return under council control

1 min read Early Years Education
Hackney Council has taken the running of its education and early years services back in-house after a decade-long contract with a private provider came to an end.

The London borough was the first in the country to recruit a private, not-for-profit company to take over its entire education services in 2002.

Throughout the decade during which The Learning Trust oversaw education, attainment in the local area improved significantly, with 75 per cent of pupils now achieving five A* to C grades at GCSE compared to 31 per cent in 2002.

Key Stage 2 test scores are also above the national average and 97 per cent of students are now achieving two or more A levels.

The Learning Trust has also been involved in joining up education and family support through children’s centres and nurseries.
