Early Years Foundation Stage: Learning disability services and transition letting settings down

1 min read
An Ofsted survey into the Early Years Foundation Stage published today (7 March) has found there is room for improvement.

The report, The Foundation Stage: A survey of 144 settings, is the firstmajor study of the foundation stage since 2001. It found most earlyyears services provided effective education and care, but in a third ofsettings, standards in communication, language and literacy were lowerthan expected.

The report said teaching for children with learning difficulties wasconsistently effective, but not always challenging enough for more ablechildren, and support for children's progression in learning from oneclass to the next needed improvement.

In its recommendations, Ofsted said local authorities should play a rolein improving procedures for children's transition to school and theDepartment for Education and Skills should ensure settings have improvedguidance on communication, language and literacy and providing effectivechallenges for more able children.
