Ofsted is not looking to directly replace director of children's services, Michael Hart, who resigned at the end of last year.
The education and social care watchdog will instead employ a director of inspection development (social care) and a national director, inspection delivery, responsible for the delivery of high quality inspections to national standards. The responsibilities of the children's services director will be subsumed into these two roles.
An Ofsted spokeswoman said Michael Hart chose to leave his post "to pursue different career interests."
She said Hart had made a significant contribution to the development of the new Ofsted, and had continued to work for the organisation in January, authoring a report on private fostering due out in the next few weeks.
Roger Shippam, deputy director of education at the inspectorate, has been appointed as children's director until the new structure is up and running.
Ofsted has been consulting staff since September 2008 on a new organisational structure.
