School breakfasts help children go the distance
When Ferret were a lad in the dim and distant 1980s school breakfasts largely consisted of a slice of white toast, bowl of soggy cornflakes or porridge masquerading as wallpaper paste. Things have moved on somewhat judging from the new “premium deli” breakfast menu recently launched by Hertfordshire Council.
Options available to Hertfordshire secondary school pupils now include rolled croquet monsieur, banana split granola, date and cinnamon bloomer, vegetarian breakfast bruschetta, brioche baps and porridge pots. However, Ferret’s personal favourite is avocado, bacon and eggs with toasted cheese soldiers.
The catering company behind the menu HCL (Hertfordshire Catering Ltd) is so convinced that the new menu will set pupils up for a day or learning that one of its staff members ran five marathons in five days powered just by school meals. Now that is commitment!
