Deerbolt YOI told to improve despite overall good outcomes

A young offender institution (YOI) in the North East has been commended for sustaining good outcomes for inmates, but has also received criticism for levels of violence and restricted access to educational opportunities.

In the latest report of Deerbolt YOI in County Durham, chief inspector of prisons Nick Hardwick said the institution remained "fundamentally safe" but the amount of violence and use of force was a concern.

The last full inspection of Deerbolt took place in 2006, when it was reported that the facility provided a safe and constructive environment, and had made improvements in the provision of purposeful activity for the young inmates.

While the latest assessment recognised that the institution had got back on track following a serious disturbance in 2007, it also said there were a number of areas that needed significant improvement.
