DCMS updates statutory guidance on delivery of youth services

The government has published updated statutory guidance for local authorities laying out duties around the provision of youth services.

The updated guidance, published by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, falls under Section 507B of the Education Act 1996 and should be referred to by local authorities “when exercising their statutory duty to secure, so far as reasonably practicable, leisure-time activities and facilities for young people aged 13 to 19 and those with learning difficulties or disabilities aged 20 to 24”.

It advises councils on assessing the need for provision in their area and providing a “sufficient” local offer for all young people as well as the use of youth workers and issues are securing suitable facilities.
