Councils plan to get children reading

1 min read Education
Councils are to produce local action plans to improve literacy as part of a national push to get children and young people reading.

January will see the launch of the National Year of Reading, a £3.5m campaign that aims to transform reading levels across the UK.

As part of the year every council in England will be developing a local reading strategy that will aim to link up existing services to help encourage reading.

Local coordinators are being appointed in each of England's 149 top-tier councils and their contact details are being added to the National Year of Reading website.

"The idea is to get services sharing good practice," said Honor Fletcher, the National Year of Reading's project director.

"The most important thing is to join up efforts to encourage reading and make them more coordinated. We want a variety of sectors to get involved including libraries, schools, arts projects and health services."
