Council rejects community attempts to reopen youth centre

Worcestershire County Council has come in for criticism after rejecting bids that would have seen a former youth centre reopened.

The Youth House building in Redditch had previously been used to run youth activities until it was closed in December 2012 as part of cost-cutting measures.

In an attempt to re-open it, two community groups – Redditch Youth and Community Enterprise (RYCE) and the Oasis Christian Centre – submitted offers under the government’s Community Right to Bid scheme.

However, Worcestershire County Council has rejected both bids and plans to place the building on the open market after its £250,000 valuation was not met.

RYCE chairman Ray Groves said valuations sought by RYCE had come in far below the council’s asking price of £250,000 due to tens of thousands of pounds worth of work required to bring it up to standard.
