To mark Foster Care fortnight (15-28 May), Wakefield Council has announced a 12 per cent increase in maintenance payments for foster carers.

It will also cut council tax rates by 70 per cent for foster families.

The changes are being introduced in addition to existing benefits for foster carers including free gym memberships and railcards and access to training and support.

Councillor Margaret Isherwood, cabinet member for children and young people in Wakefield, said: “We need more people in the district to foster, so we can keep children in our care close to the communities and people they know.”

Foster carers Karan and Mark Shaw have been foster carers for eight years through the council.
