Council bucks trend in university places for care leavers

A London borough is expecting 18 per cent of its young people in care to go to university after receiving their A-level results.

It is predicted that 10 of Ealing's looked-after children will be moving on to study at university, putting the London borough three times ahead of the national average of six per cent.

The students will join 42 of Ealing's care leavers already at university.

Nazim Hasan, an 18-year-old care leaver has secured a place at the University of London's King's College to study pharmacy after gaining A-levels in biology, chemistry and English.

He said: "I know what it is like to be in care and not have your parents around, but you can't think about that, you can't let external factors bring you down. You will get back what you put in."
