Children's Secretary Ed Balls has appointed four new members, including two directors of children's services, to the board of the National College for Leadership of Schools and Children's Services.

John Coughlan, director of children's services in Hampshire County Council, Deborah Absalom, director of children's services in Bexley, John Dunford, general secretary of the Association of School and College Leaders and Glynn Lowth, former president of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants will take up their new positions with immediate effect.

Balls said the new recruits would help the National College to progress into the future.

"They will bring a wealth of experience to the council particularly in support of the extended remit of the National College which now includes the training and development of Directors of Children's Services," he explained.

The National College supports schools and children's services leaders with a range of strategic initiatives, leadership development programmes and policy and research activities to enable them to develop into outstanding leaders.

As of December 2009, the College had 63,000 full members and over 10,000 affiliate members.
