Interview: John Dunford, general secretary, Association of School and College Leaders

2 mins read Education Interview
That Education Secretary Michael Gove chose teaching union veteran John Dunford to review the role of the children's commissioner chimes with the new Department for Education's focus on all things schools.

Dunford has had a long career in education, including 12 years as general secretary of the Association of School and College Leaders (ASCL) and 16 years as a head teacher.

But despite being steeped in education, Dunford says he is approaching the review with "a very open mind". "The call for evidence has deliberately been as wide as possible, so that I can draw in the widest possible range of experience on issues relating to children," he explains. "Clearly I have a great deal of experience of children, having worked in schools for 20-odd years. I've spent my whole time thinking about children and how best they can be educated. But the children's commissioner has a wider brief beyond schools to all aspects of children's lives."
