Cornwall DCS resigns ahead of expected Ofsted criticism

Cornwall's director of children, schools and families has stepped down as the council prepares itself for further criticism from Ofsted over the state of its social care services.

Dean Ashton resigned from his post this week, claiming the council needed a fresh approach to improving services for children's social care.

An unannounced Ofsted inspection in July raised some serious concerns over the overall quality of practice. A further inspection was announced in September. The report of the inspection has not yet been released but the council's chief executive, Kevin Lavery, admitted that he expects more bad news.

"We have not yet received the final Ofsted report but we supplied the inspectors with the evidence they have used to make their judgments so we know that we have major issues to address," he said.
