The proposals, reported by the Times, could see the Home Office change legislation to become corporate parents for unaccompanied asylum-seeking children arriving in the UK.

The government’s Illegal Migration Bill, which was introduced to parliament earlier this week, states that under new proposed legislation – which, if passed, would tighten controls on illegal immigration to the UK – “the Secretary of State may provide, or arrange for the provision of, accommodation in England for unaccompanied children in England”.

It adds: “While a child is residing in accommodation for unaccompanied migrant children, the Secretary of State may provide, or arrange for the provision of, other types of support to the child.”
