Illegal Migration Bill: Children’s commissioner ‘not consulted’ over proposals

The children’s commissioner for England says she was “not informed” of plans for the Home Office to take responsibility for unaccompanied asylum-seeking children living in hotels.

In an open letter to Home Secretary Suella Braverman about the Illegal Migration Bill, which passed its first reading in the House of Commons last night (13 March), Dame Rachel de Souza wrote: “I am concerned that the bill has been introduced without any pre-legislative scrutiny and without consulting my office.” 

The controversial bill, which has drawn criticism over plans including its failure to protect human trafficking victims, states: “While a child is residing in accommodation for unaccompanied migrant children, the Secretary of State may provide, or arrange for the provision of, other types of support to the child.”
