Children's services budget in Cheshire East set to increase

1 min read Social Care Youth Work
Cheshire East Council has proposed to increase its children's services budget despite a 25 per cent cut in government grants over the next four years.

The children’s services department will be given a boost of £900,000, which the council claims will help to meet its commitments to looked-after children.

But the measure does not mean all areas will be protected — the council said it will "reduce activity levels" where acceptable and improve commissioning to reduce cost in other areas.

Leader of the authority Wesley Fitzgerald said: "The council is facing high demand for services — particularly those involved in care of the elderly, protecting and enhancing the lives of children and repairing and enhancing our winter-damaged road network.

"This is set against a backdrop of the government’s tightening of public sector purse strings to manage the national deficit reduction programme. We are responding positively to meet this challenge, as we recognise that delivering high-value, low-cost council services is essential — and a vital part of being accountable to the people of Cheshire East."
