Children's centres: 3m plan for children's enterprise zone

A Liverpool children's centre has unveiled plans for a multi-million pound project that could make it a driving force in community regeneration.

Sure Start Speke is pushing ahead with its vision for a "children'senterprise zone", which will see it team up with a local unemploymentcharity (Children Now, 31 May-6 June). The children's centre is workingon the vision with Speke Training and Education Centre, which is in alarge building nearby.

The plan includes constructing a five-storey building on the educationcentre's site to house Speke Training and a host of small businesses,new early years training facilities, a play centre, and arestaurant.

Part of the site may be sold off to meet some of the estimated 3mcost. The hope is that funders like the Big Lottery Fund andFuturebuilders will also invest, said development manager RobbieDavison.
