Children's centre staff to be trained to help families with disabled children

Children's centre staff will be offered training to deliver better outcomes for families with disabled children under an initiative led by Contact a Family.

The charity, with help from counselling charity Relate, has developed a series of workshops and training sessions aimed at helping staff to recognise and respond to the problems faced by parents of disabled children.

The scheme is hoping to help childcare professionals focus on the problems that can lead to a family break up, by helping them to be more confident when discussing relationships with parents, understand more about why and when parents need to look for support and increase knowledge of specialist support.

Louise Derbyshire, family linking officer at Contact a Family, said: "Couples caring for a child with a disability face a unique combination of emotional, social, physical and financial pressures, which impact on family life. They are often at greater risk of marital problems and divorce.
