Children's centre numbers mask real reduction in services, says Daycare Trust

Sixteen children's centres have closed across England since April 2010, but mergers and other local restructures of Sure Start have led to a net reduction of 281 centres, children's minister Sarah Teather has revealed.

The figures were released in response to a parliamentary question and are based on information supplied by local authorities.

Anand Shukla, chief executive of the Daycare Trust, said the figures mask changes to opening hours and reductions in services that many children’s centres offer.

“We are extremely concerned about the cuts to Sure Start provision we have been witnessing across the country,” he said.

“The figures on the number of children’s centres closing only tell half the story. As we know, services, staff and opening times have been cut at many more children’s centres. Sure Start offers a vital lifeline to many families and is crucial to ensuring the best start in life for all children.
