Six out of 10 local authorities cannot commit to keeping all their existing Sure Start centres open, a survey has revealed.

The research conducted by 4Children and the Daycare Trust in conjunction with Nursery World found that 42 per cent of local authorities will either be making closures or had not finalised their budget decisions.

Just 39 per cent confirmed that they would be retaining all existing centres, while 19 per cent said they had no plans to make closures but could not commit to standing by this position throughout 2011/12.
