Duty to provide full daycare removed for children's centres in deprived areas

2 mins read Early Years
Children's centres in deprived areas will no longer be obliged to offer full daycare or hire staff with both Qualified Teacher and Early Years Professional status, children's minister Sarah Teather has announced.

Speaking at the Daycare Trust conference today (16 November), Teather said ministers will remove the requirement for children’s centres in the 30 per cent most disadvantaged areas to provide 40 hours of full daycare a week.

She said that due to low take-up, local authorities often have to subsidise provision out of budgets that should be used to provide other Sure Start services, including family support and work to reach out to vulnerable families in the local area.

The government has said that this will not mean Sure Start children’s centres will stop providing full daycare, but that they will have to shape services around the free entitlement for two-, three- and four-year-olds.
