Children in care given little notice of placement moves

More than half of children in care were given a week or less notice before they were moved to a different placement, the children's rights director Roger Morgan's annual monitoring report has found.

Out of the 2,000 children in care involved in the Children’s Care Monitor 2011, nearly a quarter (23 per cent) said they were given no notice and were told on the day they moved.

Children also reported being separated from their siblings, something raised in last year’s monitor. Nearly three-quarters of the children who had a sibling in care said they had been given different placements.

Up to the time of the survey, the average number of times children said they had moved placements was five higher than the four reported last year.

But the survey also revealed that 89 per cent of the children rated their overall care as good or very good.
