Childcare bill: Amendments herald more care and better access to information

Campaigners are celebrating changes to legislation that should mean more childcare and better information for parents of disabled young people.

The amendments were made to the Childcare Bill during its final stagesin Parliament last week. The ground-breaking legislation was agreed byMPs and peers. It should become law later this month.

Speaking after the final debate on the Bill, children's ministerBeverley Hughes told a 4Children event she was delighted the law hadmade it. "It's the first Bill dedicated to under fives," she said.

The legislation places several new duties on local authorities includingensuring there is enough childcare for local families. The Bill was alsoamended so that councils must ensure there is childcare for disabledyoung people up to the age of 18, rather than 16 as originallyplanned.
