Chief executive of Action for Children made a Dame

Clare Tickell, chief executive of Action for Children, and Helen Dent, chief executive of Family Action, are among at least 115 professionals and volunteers from the children and young people's sector recognised in the Queen's New Years honours list.

Tickell, whose charity works with disabled children, on youth issues, with children in care and supporting families throughout the UK, was appointed Dame Commander of the British Empire for services to young people, while Dent was appointed CBE for services to children and families.

Tickell said: "It has been such a privilege to work with children and young people throughout my career. Our work is vital in supporting and representing so many communities, and I am so proud to get this award."

Stephen Munby, chief executive of the National College for Leadership of Schools and Children's Services, was also appointed CBE, while those appointed OBE included Kay Bews, chief executive of Home-Start UK, for services to children, and Frances Crook, director of the Howard League for Penal Reform.
