The call has been made by education charity Impetus, which says that current data around the links between how long pupils spend at school and their attainment “is sorely lacking”.
It calls on the DfE to “prioritise tracking data on the length of the school day and its link to attainment to better inform decisions”.
The charity says the research is needed as currently there are marked differences between schools over the length of the school day. Currently schools in England have autonomy over the timetable.
Impetus found that the length of the school day varies by up to one hour and 45 minutes of teaching time each day. This equates to eight hours and 20 minutes more classroom time each week for some pupils in England.
