Charity urges government to ‘learn lessons from Conservative education legacy'

The Labour government is being urged to learn lessons from challenges to emerge from the education policies of Conservative governments over the last 14 years.

The call has been made by social mobility charity Sutton Trust in its analysis of education policy since 2010.

Low investment in education, a failure to close the attainment gap between disadvantaged pupils and their peers, and an erosion of post-16 and emotional wellbeing support, have blighted this period concludes the charity.

In particular the final years of the Conservative government saw a worsening in measures to improve attainment among disadvantaged pupils.

Improvements had included investment in education and Sure Start centres by the former Labour government in the early 2000s and the introduction of the Pupil Premium to fund extra support by the coalition government of the Liberal Democrats and Conservatives in 2010.
