Campaigners protest against threat to Connexions

A series of protests were carried out today (16 March) against cuts made to careers services in the North West.

Connexions services across the region are at risk of closure as a result of local authority budget cuts.

Trade union Unison has warned that the cuts coupled with rising youth unemployment figures could be disastrous. To highlight this issue, Unison North West Region Connexions held a number of simultaneous protests.

Young people, parents, staff and those from other youth organisations attended the protests across Warrington, Chester, Manchester, Tameside, Liverpool, Blackpool, Bolton and Crewe.

Ian Wilson, union representative for Warrington, said the protest was a success: "We drummed up a lot of support by using placards, whistles and a megaphone. One of the Connexions PAs brought along a mock coffin for supporters to write their views on postcards and post them into it. This demonstrated the mourning of services to young people."
