Campaigners praise expansion of disability key workers

1 min read Health Social Care
Children's campaigners have backed the government's pledge to expand its key worker scheme for families with disabled children.

Many councils and children's trusts already provide key workers to families with children under five, those making the transition into adulthood and children with complex needs.

But under proposals outlined in the government's Families and Relationships Green Paper this will be expanded to cover all children and young people with disabilities up to the age of 19.

The paper proposes a series of pilots over the next financial year to trial this wider use of key workers. If successful this could lead to a nationwide roll out.

Christine Lenehan, Every Disabled Child Matters (EDCM) board member and director of the Council for Disabled Children, said: "This is a real victory for families with disabled children. Key workers have long been recognised as the most important solution for families in addressing the challenges of working with many different services."
