His appointment comes four months after former ADCS president Alison O'Sullivan was originally announced as the new chair. However, little more than a week later, Scie said the appointment would not be proceeding.
Burstow is currently chair of the north London based Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust, and professor of mental health public policy at the University of Birmingham.
He was a Liberal Democrat MP from 1997 to 2015, and was a social care minister at the Department of Health from 2010 to 2012.
