Former DfE minister to become Cafcass chair

1 min read Social Care
Former children's minister Edward Timpson has been appointed chair of the Children and Family Court Advisory and Support Service (Cafcass), it has been announced.

Timpson, who lost his ministerial role when he failed to win re-election to parliament at last year's general election is due to take over as chair of the organisation on Monday (9 April).

He replaces Baroness Tyler of Enfield who has been chair since February 2012. His appointment will last for three years.

The appointment is the latest in a series of children's services role taken up by the former children's minister in recent months.

In January it emerged that he has been appointed to advise children's commissioner for England Anne Longfield.

And last month he was appointed to lead a review into school exclusions.

Cafcass was recently rated "outstanding" by Ofsted, winning praise for continuous improvement against a backdrop of rising demand. Ofsted said that the organisation listens to children, understands their world and acts on their views.

Inspectors noted that the vast majority of Cafcass staff at all levels consistently provide excellent-quality services for children, their families and family courts.

Commenting on his appointment, Timpson said: "As a former family law barrister I know just how complex and crucial the work of Cafcass is.

"I'm looking forward to supporting all those who help provide an outstanding service for children in need of our help, as well as ensuring Cafcass is at the forefront of the innovation and positive reform needed in our family justice system."

Cafcass chief executive Anthony Douglas said: "We are looking forward to working with Edward on issues affecting not just Cafcass but the whole of the family justice system.
